lost go to desktop icon

At the bottom of my screen I used to have an "icon" that I could click and it
would immediately take me back to my desktop. Somehow I have lost that. Do
you know how I can get it back again?

I would probably start by posting to either a Windows XP or a Windows Vista
group.
