lStop nannying the world. Let us choose our security level

P

Phil Hodgson UK

I am SOOOOO annoyed with Microsoft, William Kennedy & Bill Gates.

I have just sent my self a URL from my work computer to my home PC. When I
got home, My system will not allow me to see my own attachment.. and what is
worse is that there is NOTHING I can do to override this .

I have been building PC's for over 10 years and am wholeheartedly sick to
death of the meglomaniacial Microsoft telling us what we are allowed to do
and what programs we should use.

I like MS software on the whole, but this, although a small thing, is USCH a
major mind screw. You have absolutely NO right to stop me from altering my
own security levels.

You have left me no choice.. I shall have to now return to using EudoraMail
like I used to years ago.

Unless you come up with a way that I can turn the damned security down on my
OWN PC!!! I cannot believe that MS has the temerity to actually condesend to
tell me how to run my life.

How big-headed is that?????!!!!

I want to manually adjust the settings to allow me to run ANYTHING tht is
sent to me, should I choose to do so. And I want an answer... NOW!

Though, to be quite honest, the sheer arrogance of the whole company will
probably lead them to think that they are right, that everyone else in the
whole world is wrong and that they shouldn't even bother replying to me....

We'll see....

So I take it in your 10 years of building experience you haven't kept up with
the changes made to XP or IE, huh? Because if you had, you'd have navigated
to Internet Options ---> security and changed everything to whatever you
wanted.

Oh, and in the future if you give a more detailed description of your error
maybe people could give more advice than checking your IE security
settings... because that's all I have to go on right now.

Well in your ignorant bliss it seems apparent you didn't read the whole
message. Did you rename the extension or zip it? You seem to know this
problem exists, in your research found how to get around it, and instead of
doing something about AS SIMPLE AS CHANGING THE EXTENSION, you elect to just
piss and moan.

I'll apologize for jumping the gun before , but I will not apologize for
attacking you when YOUR arrogance keeps you from doing what it takes to get
around a simple problem. You cry because you're "smart enough" to know what
you want, which makes you arrogant in that statement. You state you're
smarter than the average user, which, be it fact or assumption, is arrogant.

It's a small inconvenience that, if anything, is making your life easier as
a whole because now you don't have to fix your neighbors, mom's, brothers,
uncles, dog groomers, butchers PCs when they accidentally open an EXE they
shouldn't have opened in the first place. And don't go throwing antivirus as
an option because if you really have been in the industry for 10 years you
know damn well that most end users DO NOT have an AV program that is up to
date.

So zip your attachments, send them home, or go to Eudora and quit crying on
the message boards.

I hope this cures your whining.

and if you would read it, you'll see that there are 5 official ways to
counteract it and one not mentioned - changing a reg key - see
http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/esecup/getexe.htm for more information. I
normally recommend Attachment options (its a donationware utility from a
fellow Outlook MVP at www.slovaktech.com) but with your vast experience,
editing the registry is probably easier.

We recommend sending text urls, not attachments - and to this end, there is
Mailto_url (http://www.slipstick.com/addins/gallery/index.htm#mailto).
