Mail Merge to an access DB

Having a little bit of an oddball issue here with a Word doc that merges to
an Access DB.

We have a form letter designed in Word with an onOpen action to ask for a
data source. We'll open the Word doc and point to the Access DB and we get
our form letter. The Word doc is in read only mode and password protected.
Next we click the "mail merge recipients" button and choose our recipients
and hit the "edit" button. At this point, we should see the Address info of
a person in the Access DB and generally we should.

Here's the problem...

If more than one person has that Database in use, we immediately get a pop
up saying "This operation cannot be completed because of dialog or engine
failures. Please try again later." This is consistent...and we know it's
going to happen when we see a DB with the same nem in the folder with an
"ldb" ext.

The word version is Word 2K3 but the DB is Access 2000. We've already tried
to convert the DB to 2003 and nogo.

What the heck am I missing here. It seems pointless to have an Access DB on
a group share with shared info if only one person can use it at a time. I've
already checked the "Default Record Locking" and it's set for "no locks".
"Default Open Mode" is set to "Shared".

Helllllllllllllllllllp!!!
