making a letterhead template

So I haven't used templates very much in Word and I'm just wondering if I'm
doing something wrong. I designed letterhead for a client and now have to
lay it out in a Word template. Part of the letterhead design is at the top (I put
this in the 'header') but I want the address and phone number to display as
an image on the left side of the page. The text margin should be at 2". The
problem is that I can't set the margin to 2" on the document because then
the image with the address information shifts over as well. So I set the text
as a text box.

The problem with this solution is that when you're typing and you get to the
end of the page you have to manually reset the cursor on the following
page. Because the address only appears on the first page I was able to set
the margin to 2" on the second and all subsequent pages, it's just getting
from the first page to the second page which is a problem.

Does anyone know how to deal with this? I looked at templates that come
with the Office package but it seems most letterhead options only use
images in the header and footer so they never have the problem of text
appearing in the body of the page...

thank you

Either use a section break between the first and second
page to set your margins differently or use File/Page
Setup/Layout tab different first page. I think this what
you are getting at with your question, but it wasn't quite
clear.

hi - thanks for posting this link... i followed the instructions under "more
complex letterhead" and it basically works. i was able to get my image to
appear on the left-hand side of the first page correctly by using a text box.
the text flows to the 2nd page without a problem now. i'm having one
problem, however, which is that when i am typing my letter and the 'view
header and footer' mode is off, if i select-all and delete the text i've written
the text box on the left side of the page also gets deleted. is there a way to
make the text box 'lock' to the page so that once you begin typing it cannot
be deleted?

thank you

If your text box is anchored to the header, it should not be deleted when
you Select All, which should affect only the text in the document text layer
or story.

thanks for replying, i really appreciate the help... but so how do i make sure
my text box is anchored to the header?

You have to create the text box while the header pane is open. View | Header
and Footer, then create the text box.

Hmm.. that's how I did it but it still deletes if I do select-all and hit the
delete button. I can't select it on its own, it only happens if I do select-all or
if I hit the delete key when there's no text at all. It doesn't seem to happen
if I hit backspace.

Maybe it's a bug? I'm on a mac and I'm making this for someone using a PC.

anyhow, thanks for your help

I can't delete a text box anchored to the header unless I have the header
pane open; that is, as long as I'm in the document layer, pressing Delete
with or without all text selected has no effect on anything in the
header/footer. It's possible that the Mac does do this differently; perhaps
you should post in

hi i just wanted to thank for you for helping me out -- i checked my file on
a PC and realized that the problem had something to do with the fact that I
accidentally had two images pasted one over the other (at some point when I
was working on the file I didn't delete an image before replacing it with a
new one). anyhow, I started over from scratch and it's working now (on mac
and pc)
