Master Project Plan in 2000

Ok--don't harass me about why a master plan in being used in Project 2000.
) don't shoot the messenger! A PM is having an issue with duplicate tasks
showing on the resource sheet and we are trying to resolve the issue. He is
copying and pasting the project plans into the master project plan and
somehow getting duplicate tasks. He is trying to get too much out of 2000 but
he has to use what he has.

I just need some things to troubleshoot for in order to help him. Thank you
in advance,

Regards,
A.L.

Drea,
Why would we harass you about a master plan in Project 2000? I use
Project 2000 on a daily basis and my main project plan is a consolidated
master with linked subprojects.

First of all, something is awash with the statement, ". . .duplicate
tasks showing on the resource sheet . . .", because "tasks" do not
appear on the Resource Sheet. Second, copying and pasting is the most
inefficient way to create a master. Instead, open a blank file and then
go to Insert/Project. In the Insert Project window that opens, select
each of the subprojects that you want in the master. If you want the
subprojects linked to the master (but not actually a part of it), just
hit "ok" and you will end up with a dynamically consolidated master. If
you do not need the subprojects linked to the master (more akin to a cut
and paste operation), uncheck the box at the bottom of the Insert
Project window and then hit "ok". In that case you will end up with a
statically consolidated master.

Now, what problem(s) are you trying to troubleshoot?

Hope this helps.

John,

There are three of eight resources that are showing duplicate tasks in the
Resource Usage sheet ) and I have been tasked to figure out why this is
happening. So I was trying to solicit advice regarding some things to check
out that may cause this to happen--aside from trying to figure out some of
the 'special' things he is trying to get MS Project 2000 to do.

Thank you,
Drea

Drea,
There could be many reasons why the same resource assignment (i.e. task)
appears more than once for a given resource in the Resource Usage View,
particularly if the file was created using copy/paste from other files.
The most obvious reason is that a given resource is assigned to a task
with the same name in each separate file. Then when the separate files
are copied and pasted into a new file, the resources assignments are
carried across.

Beyond that, is is difficult to tell what might be happening without
actually seeing the file. If you don't mind sending it via e-mail, you
may send it to me directly and I'll take a look at it. If you do send
it, just remember to zip it first. If the file contains sensitive or
proprietary information, I can send you a free macro that will
desensitize it or you can get a similar macro from my fellow MVP, Jack
Dahlgren on his website at:
http://masamiki.com/project/macros.htm
Jack's macro is called "scrub"

By the way, did you try creating the consolidated file using the method
I described in my first response?

Hope this helps.
