Hi
when i begin typing it is always followed by weird signs and asterisk
type things, looks like music writing.all over the page.

could anyone tell me what i have done to get this, it never used to be
like it.

Have you checked to see what font you are using. It sounds like you have
inadvertently switch to Windings or one of the Symbol fonts.

Or if you can see the words you are typing and they are followed by weird
symbols, you probably need to click on the Show/Hide icon. This will remove
symbols such as ¶
