Microsoft Office Document Imaging

When attempting to open a Microsoft Office Document Imaging file, we get,
"The selected file is not a valid document imaging file"
We have many computers and this seems nothing in common with the computers
opening the file or giving the error..
The file will give the error on one computer and the same file will open on
another so it is not a corrupted file.
This is a new way we are transferring data so some computers have never
worked correctly.
Various versions of Office Including Office XP Small Business and Office
2003 Pro.
It has been uninstalled and reinstalled with no change

Hi Joseph,

What file format are you using and how are the files
being generated?

The .MDI file format, for example, is only supported in
Office 2003 and there are some TIFF 'flavors' that can
cause fits for MS Office Document Imaging.

Additional information just discovered
The version number of Microsoft Office Document Imaging on the computers
that work is 11.0.1897.0
The others are 1.03.2349.1
How di I get the newer version?
Can not find a download, all updates are installed

Do not ignore because I posted from web, newsreader is not convenient at

Hi Joseph,

The first one is from Office 2003, the second one is Office XP(2002).
MS Office Document Imaging update isn't offered by Microsoft separately
from updating a MS Office product to a 2003 version and, as mentioned
in the prior reply, only Office 2003 supports the new .MDI file format

The web interface delayed my second post by several hours.

At least one of the computers able to open these has Office XP SBE.
But it also has Access 2003 and possibly more as yet undetermined.
Is this part of Access or what?

If I understand correctly the person creating these can choose the TIFF
format instead of MDI and it should still work?

Hi Joseph,

If you are installing MS Access 2003 then the MS Office Document Imaging from that version can be installed (may want to uninstall
the 2002 feature first) to allow use of the .MDI format.

In both Office XP and Office 2003 the TIFF format can be used, but there is an 'annotations' feature in Office 2003's Document
Imaging and the annotations
may not always 'show up' in the Office XP/2002 version.
