Microsoft Student and Teacher 2003

I have loaded this from new and have installed service pack 2 as requested
but when I try to open a saved file it just locks up and I cannot open it.
This applies in word and excel. When I click again obviously it says "not
responding". Any suggestions of how I can access my saved files without word
or excel locking up on me?
