Microsoft Word, Arrows for tabs

Okay so my cousin has been using my laptop a lot and she's done all this
weird stuff to my word program, I've managed to change most of it back,
however, whenever I use a tab it turns into an arrow and I don't have any
idea how to change it. I can highlight the arrow-tab and press tab again and
it becomes like any other tab, but the arrows get really annoying. Does
anyone know how to change this??

Then I'm afraid it isn't clear what the problem is... Let's go back to your
original message.

Please be a bit more accurate as to what you mean by "weird stuff" - that
tells absolutely nothing about the current problem.

It the non-printing characters are displayed you *should* see an arrow
appear each time you press the Tab key. What do you mean by "it becomes like
any other tab"? What's different about it in the first place?

Is this in a specific document or is it happening in all documents,
including new ones? What do the settings on the Ruler display?

From your more recent message, what do you mean by "go away"? Do you just
not want to see the arrows, do you want to alter the amount of space they
occupy? Do you mean the default tab stops are not what you prefer?

I'm certain someone will know how to "change this" if only you can provide a
more explicit description of what "this" is.

It would also be helpful to know which exact version of Word/Office you're
using - the solution may vary depending on what the problem actually is.
