Milestones indentation

Hi,
this is a very low priority question, sometimes it is very useful to create
milestones to mark the end of a summary task as well as a milestone to mark a
start of a summary task. My question is related with the position relatively
to the summary task where those milestone should be indented and more
important the reason why (if there is any particular reason).
Example 1:
Summary Task A
Start ST A
A.1
A.2
A.3
End ST A

Example 2:
Start ST A
Summary Task A
A.1
A.2
A.3
End ST A

Example 3:
Summary Task A
Start ST A
A.1
A.2
A.3
End ST A

Thank you in advance for your feedback :)

Elsa,
The answer is pretty simple. Your example 3 is the only viable option.
Remember that a summary task is not a task at all, it is a summary of
everything indented under it. Unless the start and finish milestones are
under the summary, they will not be part of it.

Hope this helps.

Thanks John for your reply.
The reason of my post was because I remembered to see an advice somewhere to
indent the milestones (the end milestone, nothing was mention about the start
milestone) at the same level as the summary task and I couldn't remember the
reason why. But I've been investigating and I figured where I saw this advice
and the reason why, the reason is for ease of high-level reporting, with this
structure in place, showing and printing Outline Level 1 tasks in a project
View for example you see the summary task and its corresponding milestone.
The Milestones show the Finish date for the summary task. The source is the
book “Ultimate Learning Guide to Microsoft Office Project 2007†page 87 ;-).

Hi,

You can get away with milestones being other than under the summary task, by
first having a "SS" type for the start milestone and link it as a successor
to the first activity under the summary task, and then set the finish
milestone as a normal "FS" type link to the last activity under the summary
task. Then you have two milestones driven by the first and last activities
undeer the summary task, but they do not need to "live" under the summary
task. I often do this so that I have a list of milestones in one area to
report on.

Hope this helps.
