Ms Project too slow

B

bidzis

Hi,

performing single update using Ms Project takes almost an hour in our
organization. Server machine has 4 processors (which are boring most of
time), 1 GB RAM and SQL Server 2k database. Also 100 Mb NIC is used not more
than 1%.

Does anybody know how to speed up the server ? Or this is normal (1 hour
necessary for update ?)

I assume you are talking about updates to Project Server? Which version? If
it's 2003, what SP level? How many Tasks? Is this for all projects or just a
specific project? Does this also happen if you update a project on the
server box itself?

Please provide some information to help us help you, I'm afraid our crystal
balls aren't that useful!!

Hi Rod,

thanks a lot for your reply. Server config: Win 2003 Stand, Proj Server 2003
(+ SP2a) + SQL Server 2k Enterprise (8.00.760 - SP3) + Sharepoint Servies
2.0 (+ SP2). Will let you know more info in next email tommorow.. We are
going to increase RAM to 2GB (it uses about 1.2 GB a week after reboot)

Thanks again for willingness to help, we are really desperate with that,
users (using M$ Project Prof on their local machines) are really unhappy
with the server performance... And I'm still beginner in administering M$
Project :(

best regards

Bidzis,

How many tasks does the schedule you are updating have? Also, are you
connecting to the server through VPN or are you on the network inside
the firewall?

Please advise.

Hi Sean,

Approximately number of tasks in one project is from to 200 to 350 tasks
(summary tasks excluded) with 3 to 4 outline levels. The specific of our
projects is number of used customized enterprise fields (about 30).
The problem seems not to be dependent on project. We are working in the
Intranet.

Hi Rod,

we don't have Ms Project Prof installed on the server, so no idea how it
works there, but will probably try that - good way to eliminate network
problems during investigation.

See the thread further for more answers for your questions.

thanks,

see some log entries below (C:\Office... are most frequent, which is

System log:

The Project Server Scheduled Process Service service terminated
unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action
will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation
permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{0C0A3666-30C9-11D0-8F20-00805F2CD064}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20). This security
permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

What do you think about it ? We have really problem with the performance of
this machine (some days is better, but updates usually take from 20 mins to
an hour, which make users nervous).

Sorry for long response time.

... the problem is related to all PCs and projects. Today, for example, I got
screenshot from a user stating ODBC connection Error ("ODBC string was cut"
or something like that...) - but it's occasional (NOT frequent and common) -
it happened when update took even over an hour.

Actual SQL Server Log size is about 64MB, I usually cut it (and shring
database) once a month. It used to grow even until 8 GB, however last two
months is constant (what's also strange to me).

I wonder if Win XP firewall or Mcafee (on users' workstations of course) may
cause such slow performance .. I'm going to check it experimentally
tomorrow.

I also wonder if Ms Project Prof. enables different methods of connection to
database and if it's possible to change it. From my experience with Ms
Access few years ago, the best method was ADO (ODBC was v. weak - caused
many connection issues, and DAO worked only fine with one user :)). I saw
in some Project doc, it uses XML, but maybe XML is good for small projects
only ?

Just my few considerations, maybe you could at least eliminate some of them
and help to find the best path to solution. I'm aware that there could be
probably many reasons in such big environment where different applications
cooperate.

Anyway, thanks a lot for the interest and trying to help.

best regards,

bidzis
