MSProject: how do I set predecessors on 2 tasks that cannot happe.

I have 2 tasks that cannot happen at the same time. Task1 should happen
first, then task2... but, if task2 starts, task1 must wait until it is
finished (i.e., I want to build a fireplace hearth before the carpet goes in.
To avoid being late, I can put the carpet in and lay covers over the carpet
to install the fireplace. Can I show both can start, but are mutaully
exclusive? or do I have to update the predecessors once one of the task
begins?

There is a way you can do this using leveling, but I'm afraid you wouldn't
like what it did to the rest of your plan.

My advice is plan the way you think it is going to go and if you find out
later that because of certain occurances (ie: the stone mason for your
fireplace is busy on a different job) your plan won't work, make the
adjustments at that time. Remember, you are making a plan so don't be
surprised if it needs some changes once in a while.
