Multiple Resources assigned to a single task

I have a resource with 4 people assigned to it. Work is equally shared.
Resource #2 is leaving the company on Friday and a new Resource (Resource #5)
is going to finish Resource #2's work. How do I stop resource #2 and add
resource #5 without screwing up the work duration and work % complete? I am
thinking that I can do this by going to the resource sheet, bring up the
resource information, and change the working time to non-working time for
Resource #2 after this Friday and for Resource #5 changing their working time
to non-working time for all dates prior to this Friday. Is this the best way
to solve my dilemma?

Hi,

Gantt Chart, select the task(s), Click the Resource Allocation buttton,
select the leaving resource, click replace, select the new resource, OK.

Jan,

This messes up my duration and dates. i don't want to have to do a project
just to fix a handful of tasks...most of the tasks haven't started, but there
are 5 tasks that are in progress that I don't want messed up.

If what I wrote in my first message isn't correct my only other solution is
to create duplicate tasks and adjust all of the dates so I can mark off those
tasks as 100% complete up to this Friday and all the remaining work to start
next Monday as 0% complete. This shouldn't have to happen, but I know that
MS-Project isn't very user friendly when trying to change any part of a task
that is in progress and needs changes like this done to it.

It doesn't mess up anything. It simply does what you ask.
It replaces the resource for the undone work only and only on the selected
tasks.

But by doing this the way you explained my duration and dates change as well
as the % Complete. I do not want any of these to change.

And the obvious,

Do the resources have exactly the same calendar?

The new resource is not suspect to an autoleveling
situation and upon substitution is recalculated to
overcome allocations.

I have the main project calendar, a test weekend calendar, my departing
resource's calendar (working time ends this Friday), and my new resource's
calendar (working time begins next Monday).

well,
there you go then.
New resource isn't working on Friday so when you substitute those works values have to shift to Monday.
