My Documents folder problem

M

Mel

I have the My Documents folder on the desktop with many folders and files in
it. Suddenly I have a My Documents (2) folder on the desk top. It contains
many of the My Documents folders and files with a (2) in the folder document
names. I don't know how this happened.

Is there a way to get everything back in place in original My Document
folder with out the (2)?

If they're on your desktop then all you have to do is the
following:

Double click on My Documents(2) to open it. Whichever
items you want to move to My Documents do the following:

Do a 'left click' with your mouse and hold it. Drag the
item to My Documents and release the mouse. That will
deposit the item into My Documents at the same time
deleting it from My Documents(2). Keep repeating till
you move everything you want. And don't worry. You
aren't the first and certainly not the last person to
duplicate a folder by mistake. :)

Every folder and sub folder I drag and drop in the My Documents folder still
has the (2) at the end of the folder name. Is there a way to get rid of the
(2) on all of the folders at once?

If the problem is the name -- sure you can get rid of
it. Place the cursor over the name > right click to open
the menu> then left click on rename -- the name of the
file will be highlighted -- at that point you can change
it to whatever you wish > then just click

This is a copy of the My Documents folder that you have inadvertently copied
to the desktop. I cannot imagine that it would contain anything that is not
already in the My Documents original folder and applications will point to
the original for recent saves. This version 2 should therefore be redundant
and could be deleted. If you are uncertain about taking such a drastic step,
use a zip utility to compress the folder to a file and file it away
somewhere safe.

If you do as Greg suggests and drag the filenames from the duplicate to the
original, you should get a prompt to confirm the replacement of each. You
need only update those that have more recent file dates - and my guess is
that there won't be any of those.

It's a matter of preference of course, but I don't like having folders on
the desktop. If you use Windows Explorer to handle your filing system and
create a 'favorite' link to your My Documents folder, you will be less
likely to repeat this error.

Oops. That should have been Jane not Greg to whom I referred. My eyesight is
not what it was :(

Graham,

I inferred that Mel had only accidentally copied SOME of
the items into My Documents(2) and, therefore, was
attempting to let Mel know it was no big deal to move
them back to My Documents. My assumption was Mel would
move only the items that were present in My Documents(2)
that were not present in My Documents.

No criticism intended, but if this is a copy then the originals are still
present and my further point was that this being the case, there is no
reason to copy them back again. There are mere duplicates. That should be
easy enough to establish.
