When i installed Office 2003 over office XP, the icon for all of my word documents via explorer or my documents changed to a generic one. All of the other apps (i.e. excell, powerpoint etc.) are fine. I tried the article in support (Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 825936) to no avail. I also did a complete uninstall and reinstall, and a repair too. When I click on the file, it does open with word so the association is file.
