My edits disappear after saving and closing

Okay.

There's a bug in PPT 2003 where the slide insists on using the settings for
the first master in the list of slide masters.

You can go to View/Normal (twice, so the panes are visible) then
View/Master/Slide Master. On the slide thumbnail pane on the left, drag the
appropriate slide master to the top of the list.

That should fix this slide, but the risk is that it will cause problems with
other slides.

What I usually do instead is format the text as needed, then select the
title and text placeholders and cut them. Then I paste them back on the
slide. After pasting, they're no longer placeholders. I then align my pasted
textboxes with the original placeholders.
