My query in access has records and my Mail merge does not

My problem is that when I run a query with "like" in the criteria I receive
the records I want in access but when I go to mail merge there are no
records. I have read several posts about this problem but all of them had to
do with number or dates. My problem is when I use “like†in a name criteria.
I read one post for numbers that said use the % rather than the * and Word
would accept the records. This did not work with alpha characters.

The mail merge examples write the result of the Access query to a text file
which Word then uses as the source for the merge. This should overcome any
problems with the use of the LIKE operator in the query.
