Copy and paste this into the IE address bar or Start > Run and click Go or OK as appropriate.

http://localhost/_vti_inf.html

Then view the source of the page that opens.

Open any Server Based Web and select Tools | Site Settings.
On the general tab you see the version.

Thanks for the answer Steve and Jens. I appreciate it. However, if I want to
physically find the file from my C: drive what file name should I enter in
the search engine to look for the frontpage server extension file. In other
words, I am looking for the file name with the extension. Thanks. Regards.

Unfortunately, it's really not that simple. The files for the latest version live here:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\50

But the best method to find out what version of extensions are installed is the method I posted
earlier, as the _vti_inf.html file is created on the fly as the extensions are applied to the web
site / web server.

It is then that the actual extensions "version info" is written to _vti_inf.html

Can also be in
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40
- if you are running FP 2000 SE
Or
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60
- for disc based webs and WSS webs
