New email won't show up until old email is opened

When new email arrives it does not show up in the inbox
until you open an old email. Also if you get a new email
and have not opened it and you try to change folders,
system will freeze for about 15 seconds. I am running
Windows 2000 with Office 2000 SR-1. Have tried
uninstalling and reloading Office.

Are you using Exchange server, and is there a router or switch configured
with VLANs separating your network segment from the one the server is on?
