'New Office Document" won't start MSWord

Hi,
I have office2k. I've lost the ability to click on "new office doc' and
have MSWord open. If Word is running, 'new doc' will open in a new Word doc
window.

Does anyone know what file(s) may be corrupted to have lost this linkage?
