I'm assuming you are using Internet e-mail to a POP3 and SMTP server rather
than using Exchange as the mail server.

Is the .pst file on a network (i.e., mapped) drive? Do you currently have a
connection to that mapped drive so its connection has been authenticated and
is active?

Is the .pst file in a path (i.e., directory) to which you do not have
permissions? What version of Windows are you using?

What type is the folder? An e-mail type folder? What is the home page for
that folder (look under its Properties)? Should you be using a web page for
that folder, or should it be blank so the folder is used that is in your
..pst file?

## Actually I am connecting to Exchange Server 2000, not
POP or SMTP.

## The .pst file that I want to use is Local (C:/).
Interestingly, I can open this folder and see the emails,
contacts, etc. however i cannot open the other two top
level folders in the Outlook Folder List. These
inaccessible folders are "Mailbox - [my name]"
and "Public Folders". The error message above ("unable
to display folder....") is displayed when I try to access
either of these folders.

## can't right click on these folders because I "do not
have permission to log on".

..pst file?
## duh, i don't know what you mean.

.

I'm confused. You now mention you are using Exchange. That means your
"mailbox" isn't local at all but is a mailbox on the Exchange server. Is
THAT the information store where you are having problems accessing some of
its folders?

You can use a .pst file to keep archival copies of e-mail (when using
Exchange and not using a POP3/SMTP mail service). However, you're supposed
to use an .ost file for that. So if you are using Exchange and its mailbox
defined for you there as your current information store (i.e., where new
e-mail gets delivered) then I have to assume that you are opening yet
another information store in the form of a .pst file (just like you can open
a .pst file that was used to archive expired items). For the .pst file,
have you ran scanpst.exe (Inbox Repair Tool) against it to see if perhaps it
is corrupted? How big is the .pst file? If it's an old .pst file and is
not your current information store (since you say you are using a mailbox on
the Exchange server for that) than the pointers stored in the .pst file
might no longer be valid.
