I know the Office 2003 icons are 'fuzzy' but mine are also set inside
shadowed boxes. Any way to get rid of this? A friend's setup looks cleaner.

Go to control panel -- display -- settings -- advanced -- and check if dpi
settings is set to 96 dpi or not. As Office 2003 supports only upto 96 DPI
