Office 2004 Word will not open any docs

Running office 2004 on a powerbook G4 1.67 with 10.4.11 and have been
unable to open any Word docs since about 11/1/07. I can open excel
and ppt ok. On 11/18/07 I updated my machine with both .8 and .9 from
microsoft and have also checked and repaired permissions. Any
suggestions would be great.

Despite the details you do provide you leave out some of the most
significant:) What techniques have you tried for opening a Word file (there
are at least 3) and what - exactly - does happen in response to each?

1- Double-clicking a file in a Finder window,
2- Control
-Clicking a file & choosing Open With, and
3- Using the Open command in the File menu from within Word.

I'd suggest that you apply the 10.4.11 Combo Update & see if that resolves
the problem - available here (yeah, its a big one):

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html

If there is further difficulty have a look at the troubleshooting steps at:

http://word.mvps.org/mac/MacWordNormal.html

http://word.mvps.org/mac/DamagedPrefs.html

If you've added any other utility or add-in software you may also want to
have a look at:

So what happens when you try to open them?

Can you open Word itself?

How are you trying to open them? Does it make any difference whether you
double-click their icon in the finder or use File/Open from Word?

I would think that the most likely problem is that the file associations
have been lost (which you can restore by selecting a Word file, typing
CMD-i, or choosing File/Get Info, then selecting Microsoft Word from the
Open With: dropdown, clicking Change All... to make the change global)
but you don't really give enough information to tell.

Sorry, Word itself will not open. I get a microsoft error report
message saying Word encountered a problem and needs to close.

Sorry, I cant open Word at all, I get a MS reporting error msg that
says Word encountered a problem and needs to quit. None of the normal
methods toopen the file(s) works.

Well, if Word won't launch at all, follow the last 2 links I gave you re
Normal & prefs. Based on the time frame I'd still not rule out the OS X
combo updater - especially if you originally updated to 11.4.11 via Software
Update.
