Office locks up when saving/accessing folders

When I am in a MS program and try to open a folder or save a document the
program will lock up and say that "not responding." After a few minutes it
will open up and I can see where I want to open the folder from or save. But
then when I click on the folder to save or open it will lock up again. Any
ideas

Typically it's waiting for a mapped but unconnected/unavailable storage
location to respond so it can allow you to access it. If you have
created such a situation, remove the mapping and the problem will disappear.

Bob; How do I remove the mapping? I don't understand the jargon.

Open "My Computer" and select "Red X'ed" drives , r-click and select
"Disconnect".
