Office Update is unable to check for updates

When I click on the "search for updates" on Office Update, it takes me to a
page called "Office Update is unable to check for updates". That page gives
several reasons why, but doesn't tell me what I need to know - If I can't
automatically search for updates, how do I determine which ones to install
manually?

Ditto. Cuts out at 40%. Has done so since I got the
machine. Have requested help several times but to no
avail.
