Office Updates in Multi User Network

Environment: XP Pro with Office Pro 2003 multi-users
Do Office updates have to be downloaded and installed for each user on
every machine?
As the application is resident on the hard drive and short cuts to each
users' desktop, I would think that a single download and installation to the
machine is all that is needed. However, as users some times need to use a
different machine, I need to be sure.

Thanks for any input!

A bit confusing when reading your post. Is Office 2003 installed on each users machine or are you saying that each user connects to one machine that has Office 2003 installed. If the latter case then 1 single download is the only thing that is needed. If each user has Office 2003 installed on their machine then you can use the GPO to install

My apologies for the confusing post.
Each machine has it's own Office 2003 installed on the local hard drive.
So, as users logging onto that machine are accessing the application on the
local drive.
I am doing some critical updates and applying the 2007 Compatibility Tool,
and need to be sure that any user sitting down at an updated machine will
have the tool or if I need to log in as each and every user to download and
install the updates.
I hope this is clearer... :)
Thank you!
