Office XP update on the road

T

The Kat

Microsoft demands those original disks to install the latest patch for Office XP. I am on the road with my laptop -- don't have the disks with me so I can't install the latest update until I get home, which will be in three months. Word has crashed on me so many times in the past week I count them all. MS must be inundated with the error reports from my system. But NOTHING can happen without those disks.
Does anyone have a solution to this disk demand ploy? Or are all MS users expected to carry their precious original disks with them everywhere they travel?

I believe the request is for an Office XP Edition CD that corresponds to the
Office XP Edition you have installed not the original installation CDs.

Office XP is a Microsoft product. Whether it is a Windows problem or an Office problem, Microsoft expects me to insert the ORIGINAL disk to download and install a patch necessary for my registered Microsoft program. I cannot install a patch that just might correct the problem I have with Microsoft Word.

1. my copy of the program is regiestered with Microsoft
2. Microsoft has in its records the magic number for my software registration
3. the Microsoft Office program is not functioning properly on my computer
4. Microsoft is obviously aware of a problem in their Office suite because...
5. Microsoft has published notification that a major update is available for download
6. I am unable to access this download because my ORIGINAL disk is on the other side of the world. Literally.

Microsoft creates downloads that require that the ORIGINAL disk be placed in the drive before it will permit the error to be corrected, ORIGINAL meaning that the numbers on that disk must match the registration number in their system.

Doesn't Microsoft would have some sort of download add-in that would acknowledge my purchase of the program and allow the update to install.

Without the update, my Microsoft Office programs will not operate with the best available system and, worse yet, I will continue having Word crash on my system once a day.

Maybe I am naive, but I expect Microsoft to keep my system sufficiently stable that I do not have to carry the original OS and Office disks with me every place I go. The disks cannot be copied legally and can/have sustain loss or damage during airline flights, long trips in hot busses and cars, missing luggage, customs inspections... You get the picture. And Microsoft does not replace stolen or damaged disks.

Does anyone know a way to download and install this major update WITHOUT having the ORIGINAL disk in hand? Otherwise it will be at least three months before I can correct a problem known to Microsoft and have a stable system again. *sigh*

Jumping in to correct some misinformation you have posted.

1. Microsoft DOES allow you to make a copy of your installation disks -
read the EULA.
2. Microsoft DOES replace Lost, damaged and broken disks for current
versions of their software - see the Microsoft Knowledge Base for
confirmation:

Despite your whining, you still need the disks to do any update, just like
everybody else or you need to have the disk copied to your hard drive. With
OF2003, this can be done automatically. No matter what software you buy over
time there are security updates, etc. MS is better than most in providing
updates, most manufacturers don't bother and make you wait to buy the next
updated version.

A service pack may or may not fix the crashing problem you're having. Whining definitely won't fix it. If you describe the problem a bit better, maybe someone here can offer a solution that will work until you can get the update installed. What program are you using and what are you doing when the crash occurs? Do you get an error message, and if so, what is it? Is the crash reproducible... that is, does it happen every time you do a certain thing, and if so, what is that thing? What else can you tell us about the problem?

(FF)Hi,
Please try to download the Full File version of the patches you are trying to install and cannot because of the Source Requirement. These Full File patches contain the full binaries and are not optimized. You can use the office update site for detection. When you get to the patch you want to install, click on the "More Info" link. Via that link you should be able to get the FF version of the patch.

Look for something like "A full-file administrative update for use by IT Administrators is available on the Microsoft Office 2003 Editions Resource Kit Web site. " link on the More Info page.

Now to extract the Patch (MSP) inside the exe you just downloaded, use the following command line..

<path where you downloded the exe>/t:c:\XYZPatch /c /q
so For E.g. you would dosomething like

Office2003-kb828041-client-enu.exe /t:c:\XYZPatch /c /q

Once you have extracted the MSP, doubble click on the patch to begin installation.

Note and Disclaimer: This should solve most source requirement issues, but there may be cases where this might not work fully. Also the FF patch is likely 2-3 times the size of the Optimized patch available thru the Office Update detection website.

We will also be changing the Office Update site within the next 6 months to do this automatically for you.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

Opposed to previous charming "helpful" comments that I am whining, YOU have given me hope. I will try your scenario and let you know if it works. I've got plenty of "down" time fore down-loads and this may be my salvation.
Also appreciate that this will be a future standard option (if I read you right). I spend too much time travelling to carry any more "stuff" than absolutely necessary, especially with customs officials that must examine EVERY disk that enters the country (NOT Joking).

I'll stay in contact. THANK YOU!

Yes, i do hope the solution i have outlined works for you. We are fully aware of the pain customers are facing because of source requirement during patching and we have several active solutions to be published soon as i mention below.
1. Office Update site will be updated to handle this situation automatically within the next 6 mons. This is a very high priority task for us.
2. The new version of Windows Installer (3.0) soon to be available with Windows XP Sp2 will infact also help mitigate this situation. The Installer will Squirrel away on your local machine, a back up of the file once it is patched the first time. Though this may not immediately solve your problem, it will infact get progessively better as the Installer cache size increases. So you may have to provide the disk once or using the Full File patch to get like maybe an SP, and subsequent patches should be patchable without the need of either the source or downloading a huge FF patch (as long as the file being patched was already touched). Though its hard for me to explain the technology in a few lines, we are sure WI 3.0 will be a major step forward. Service packs are quite complicated and especially Office XP SP3 since we targeted RTM, and not SP2.
3. With Office 2003, we already have somewhat mitigated this problem by giving the user the option to store a local cached copy (LIS) of installation files. You will be propmted for this option at the end of the installation. Even if users do not choose to store locally the installation files, we have tools and utilities that can recreate the LIS, though you would need the disk once to do this.

Also in my example below i used
Office2003-kb828041-client-enu.exe /t:c:\XYZPatch /c /q

Look for the xyx-kb-FullFile-enu.exe package instead. Client contains the optimized files and that wont work. Infact for XP SP3 you should be able to just doubble click on the exe and it should automatically begin the install. No need to even extract the package. The following link provides a place to get XP SP3, with the FF package available at the very bottom of the page.

At last! My programs are updated and Word has not crashed once since the update -- and it received a thorough thrashing from my backlog of work.
You are quite right that the files are large. When the new improved system comes on line, will it per chance remove unnecessary files once that system is satisfied of the program's authenticity? Or is it simply the download that is large, that the installed update is much smaller than the actual install file?

Its the next version of Office after Office XP. You can both upgrade and buy the new version to install i believe. Check out the link below for additional info on Office 2003:

The Kat said:
Hate to keep flogging this post -- it's now a bit off topic. However, you mention Office 2003; is that an upgrade from Office XP or a separate system? (i.e. do I buy a whole new system or an upgrade disk?)
As you have probably guessed, I'm not a "power" user -- I try to maintain what I have, but don't go looking for trouble. Also, I've been travelling so much and just read PC magazines at the doctor's office...

Rohit said:
The answer to that is two fold. Initially the system is going to be a fall back on the larger FF package incase we detect that the binary (optimized) update failed for various reasons, including source requirements. But combined with the new Windows Installer 3.0 version (explained in detail in my mail below), as more and more patches are applied to the system, the need for the larger FF patch decreases substantially because of the local cache created by the WI. So its a combination of both technologies that will ultimately reduce the need for source when patching.

Also like i mentioned before, Office 2003 already somewhat mitigates the problem.

Thanks

Microsoft demands those original disks to install the latest patch for Office XP. I am on the road with my laptop -- don't have the disks with me so I can't install the latest update until I get home, which will be in three months. Word has crashed on me so many times in the past week I count them all. MS must be inundated with the error reports from my system. But NOTHING can happen without those disks.
Does anyone have a solution to this disk demand ploy? Or are all MS users expected to carry their precious original disks with them everywhere they travel?

These are the same instructions I received at the Microsoft Security Summit.
However, I have tried for a week now and I don't see the "More Info" button
anywhere. Has this changed in the last couple of months? I really need to
update for the new jpg problem, but I can't.

(FF)Hi,
Please try to download the Full File version of the patches you are trying to install and cannot because of the Source Requirement.

Hi Beth,
No, nothing has changed with the MoreInfo link. If you are using
OfficeUpdate, and if you need the patch, you will see the MoreInfo link right
below the text which describes the patch. I believe its the same if you are
using WindowsUpdate.
To scan your machine using OfficeUpdate please go to
http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/maincatalog.aspx

In anycase i have listed the 3 products that we are patching (Office XP
users).

For Project 2002 Security Update: KB831931 v
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...EA-B0E4-41C7-A6F4-413864D2CCF3&displaylang=en

For Visio 2002 Security Update: KB831932 v2
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FD-7B73-43C4-AB0D-2B5EFC80EB63&displaylang=en

For all other Office Products
Office XP Security Update: KB832332 v
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...14-6D34-49DF-8D63-6C17E9A2D312&displaylang=en

Please note Project and Visio patches are already Full File. You can
download the Office FF patch from the link above.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thanks

Hi, RVB,

If the full file patch doesn't work, then you'll need the original source.
If you're referring to office 2003, I'd recommend that you create a local
installation source, so that you don't have to ask for it again.

This article should help:

You haven't done anything wrong. The full-file version reduces the
likelihood, but does not eliminate the possibility, that you will need
to insert your CD. The instructions for the full-file version say:

"Note: Some users will still be prompted for the original CD when using
the Office XP SP3 Full File Version, depending on your installation of
Office XP. For more information, please see the Microsoft Knowledge
Base article, (828451) OFFXP: Why Service Packs, Updates, and Security
Patches May Require the Office XP CD-ROM."
