One task, appearing in two places?

Hi there

I have the following situation on a rather long plan:

I have 2 streams, Stream A and Stream B. There is a task that relates to
both, can you create a task so that if I mark it done, it automatically
appears complete on both the streams?

Or, do I have to manually add it twice and keep track of it?

Project will not update Task2 from an input to Task1, other than to push a
start/finish date if the tasks are linked in some way. You could write a
macro to do it. It is somehwat common to have an identical task in two
streams. For now, you should keep it a manual process on both tasks.

For a best scheduling practice, consider if the task is truly identical or
if it is the same thing repeated twice. For example, both streams may
include "Test" but they are really Test A and Test B and should be labeled as
such.

If you have a slightly different wrinkle where the work products of Stream A
and Stream B are combined and then tested, then you should have an entirely
new section in the schedule where the two items are only tested once
(together) in a single task. You should do that in a separate "Integrated"
section of the schedule.

Since your question is somehwat generic, if you provide more detail, someone
here may be able to provide better guidance.

Hi Dharmy,

Sorry there is no utility in Project to have one task appear twice.
If it is really two occurrences, add both tasks. To quickly navigate
between the two tasks, add a hyperlink from one task to another.

If it is only one task, set it as the appropriate predecessor or
successor.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi Dharmy ,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Logic dictates that a Task is unique and can only be done once. You can
have a second task doing something different but it cannot be the same as
the first. You could try it with a milestone as a milestone consumes no
resources and no time. You can link the 2 milestones but if one finishes,
you will have to manually mark the other as 100% Complete.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Take note first of the other comments received - But if you must, a work
around is =

Use a hammock task.

Create a new task.

Make sure the task type is not fixed duration. You should be selecting and
copying the date from one cell and then pasting - "paste link" option. (paste
start of first task to start of hammock and finish of 2nd task to finish of
hammock)

Caution is required when using Hammocks - I would read previous disussions
on this before proceeding.

Also, I would make a note in Notes or Text1 field, that this task is a
hammock
