OneNote 2007 Beta 2 Updated Printing and Indexes

Hi,

I'm using ON2007, beta 2 with the Tech Refresh.

Is there a way to create an index in a manner similar to Word?

ON has a great printing system, which is good because our exams (law school)
allow us to bring our notes in, but not in an electronic format. Ideally,
I'd like to be able to create an index to my notes so I can use them while in
paper format. This is a critical problem for me because of the importance of
being able to find information fast in an exam.

Does anyone have a good solution to creating an printable index of a onenote
document?

The closest I've found is to copy and paste the note into word and create an
index from there. The drawbacks to this are that Word doesn't handle the
paste very well - multiple text blocks get serialized and look nothing like
they look on the onenote page, and also all the changes that you make to add
the indexing don't propogate back to the onenote document. Later in the
semester, you're going to have to do the whole process again.

Here's my idea on how to add it. Make it a function of the Flags or perhaps
the highlighting. Add a checkbox to the flag definition dialog that says
"index these flags." From there, you have a lot of options on what you do
with the data. One simple solution would be to just print each of the
flagged lines plus a page number at the beginning of the print process.
Another would be to create a special text block that is the index. In One
Note itself, the index would be a list of links that would jump you to the
particular section of notes. When printed, the link would be the entry plus
the page number.

Thanks!
Rudy

Hi there - I find that the Search function in OneNote works better and faster
than any index I've ever created.

The OP said he can't use the search because he can't use the computer
during the test but he can use a printed out page for the test.

Rudy, there is no way to generate an index in OneNote. If your notes are
mostly typed text then you could copy them into Word and generate an
index in there. Your time might be better spent studying though. It
depends on how quickly you can generate an index in Word. If you are an
old hand at it then you could do it as you review your notes in
preparation for the test. If you don't already know how to do it you
could be wasting valuable time trying to figure the whole indexing thing
out.

My solution to the problem was to actually generate a mindmap while I went
through my notes. I captured most of the important issues and never found
myself paging through my onenote notes during the exam... It still seems
like a useful feature for when you really want a hardcopy of your notes.
Yes, the search system works well, but screen real estate will always be
limited... well, more limited than having a pile of papers in front of you.

As the old adage goes, never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon
filled with backup tapes! (Well, printouts, in this case..)

Although a bit late as an idea for those reading through this therad
possible later:

Grant Robertson shared these words of wisdom:

I fully agree ;-)

An automatic *index* is not possible in ON.
But it might be an idea to create a page with references *manually* -
be it a TOC or and index like collection of keywords- and link the
terms to the respective page.
This would be time-taking.
But IMHO this would require to go through the stuff and read it and
think out terms fro reference. And this might be of great value for
memorizing the content one is working on.

Just my 2 cents.
