onenote service packs

I got a Toshiba M-205 S-810 here a while back with
OneNote already installed on it (an OEM version I
believe). But my question is how the heck do I get the
updates for it, I go to the office update website, it
tells me I need and update, so I download it, but it will
not install. It tells me that sku1a1.cab file is missing
and tells me to insert cd. I searched for this file on
my entire hard drive, and it is NOT there. What the heck
is going on :) sheesh? How do I update this software?

Thank you for your time.

It should be part of the OEM CD/DVD, Lonnie. Look in the COMPS\MICROSOFT
ONENOTE directory. If it isn't there, please post back. We're trying to
track some issues on this.

Same problem here. INCREDIBLY annoying, as there are people all over the web
posting the problem and there is nothing but useless answers in reply.

We have an Averatec c3500 notebook which has no original installation CDs
(only a recovery CD that will wipe the whole system clean... no individual
files available). So Microsoft says we can't apply their own SP to their own
product because we were never provided retail installation media.

Totally frustrating... want a good fix? Just post the dern CAB file
somewhere so a human being can just download it.

Lonnie:

Do you have the product key for OneNote that came with your Toshiba? (I have
the exact same computer and had the exact same problem.)

If so, uninstall OneNote. Go to the Microsoft site, and download the OneNote
trial. It will give you a chance to enter the product key. When you do, you
will have a full-working version of OneNote SP1.

Hope this works,

Michael

Yes I do. When I tried that though, I still couldn't get
past the cab file being missing. Then at one point, when
I tried just uninstalling onenote, and reinstalling with
the recovery cd, I got a message telling me that the
system was corrupt.....YIKES....sheesh...I thought.
Well, Toshiba Tech ended up telling me to just redo the
whole system, and I aggreed since I didn't really put any
much on it since getting it 6 months ago. Funny thing
though, I was able to download the service pack this time
without any problems and the stupid cab file still isn't
on my system anywhere. Go figure :) I'm just GLAD that
all is well now and I can get SP's again.

I ended up having to reinstall my entire system (per
Toshiba's suggestion). Reason being is because when I
went to reinstall OneNote, after uninstalling, I got a
system corrupt error when attempting to reinstall the
program.

Question: OneNote is a part of MS Office 2003 right?
All that came preinstalled was OneNote, but I
wanted more of ms office stuff on my system.
On my desktop I uninstalled ms office xp small
business so I could install it on my tablet.
Reason for this was to get a version of ms
outlook that I could use with ink. I asked a
ms tech on saturday if having onenote and a
full version of ms office xp small business
would cause the problem I was experiencing and
they said no. What do you think Chris? I
think that the underlying problem was that the
system thought I was trying to install 2
seperate full versions of ms office. My
opinion. What do you think? Or anybody for
that matter. :)

Oh yea forgot to tell ya that everything is fine now :)
it is working fine...not sure if I said that or not in
previous post.

I'm sorry Chris...shessh...I didn't even address your
mention of the file being in the onenote directory. The
original cab file in question was nowhere to be found, on
my hard drive or the cd...and it turns out that I didn't
need it at all in the first place, and I got the service
pack with no problems. I truly believe it was some sort
of conflict between 2 different versions of office.

Lonnie, OneNote is in the "family" of Office products, but that's about all.
They are separate programs, and OneNote doesn't come as part of the Office
"suite" in any packaged arrangement.

As for not seeing the files, take a look in Control Panel/Folder
Options/View. Unless you've manually enabled Show hidden files and folders,
removed the check mark from both Hide extensions for know file types and
Hide protected operating system files (Recommended), you're not going to see
the proper files, even in a search.

Lonnie,
For future information: It is always best to install Office versions (or
pieces) oldest to newest. Part of the problem may have come from installing
Office XP after you installed OneNote. The older version install would have
changed some DLLs that OneNote was trying to access. Since you can't easily
install Office XP before the copy of OneNote (because the OneNote gets
installed when you re-load), you might want to download a copy of the
OneNote trial and write it to CD. Then, if this happens again, you can
re-build your system, uninstall OneNote, install Office XP, and then
re-install the trial version using your original registration number.

Does that make any sense?

Yes I've ran into that problem some time ago :) and
pretty much ever since (which translates into roughly 7
or 8 years) I've set up windows to show "hidden files and
folders".

So what do you think Chris as to what was going on? The
setting discussed above was set right, the cab file is
still no where to be found on my system or the recovery
disc. There is however a file called sku1a1.xml, some
sort of document file according to windows. And there
is an 1a1 directory within the office directory, but no
sku1a1.cab file. What do you think is going on?

Thank you for your patience.

That's what we're trying to determine, Lonnie. Exactly what is happening.
My Toshiba M200 DVD has a separate folder as I previously described, which
contains the installation file for OneNote. When installed, the ONOTE11.MSI
file is in C:\MSOCache\All Users\(VeryLongNumber) because I chose to do a
custom install, with everything on the hard drive.

If Toshiba has packaged OneNote differently on your M205, that's something
else Microsoft is trying to determine. I've fed information to the Office
Team at Microsoft, but haven't heard anything yet.

Ok Chris, thanks for all your help. Hope MS gets things
figured out.

Thanks again
