Only connectors?

I just migrated to Word 2007 and have noticed something strange.

When I create a line or an arrow, it always is created as a "connector"
rather than a normal line or arrow. I can't create a normal line or arrow.

Since I have just migrated, it may be my fault -- but I was wondering
whether somebody has ever noticed anything like this?

Thanks.

P.S. I *can* create normal lines and arrows in Excel and PowerPoint (I
checked). It's only Word that gives me this strange behavior.

I, too have recently migrated to Word 2007 (within the Office 2007 suite) and
am having similar troubles with arrows between text boxes in a drawing canvas
- I am using Word 2007 in the compatability mode, with all files defaulted to
the Word 2003 format, and the arrows I draw are now all connectors to the
midpoint of the sides of the text boxes.

I can override the connector aspect by holding the ALT key when moving one
end of an arrow, but the arrows now snap to a default orientation - not
vertical (I have not tried horizontal arrows) and I have not yet figured out
how to remove the 'snap' so the arrow position is under my full control.

I am also having problems with my text boxes not being maintained when the
file is opened on a machine using Word 2003 (in spite of my use of the
compatability mode)

Well, it's nice to notice others have experienced this issue. By the
way, it seems that the same issue is in PowerPoint and Excel 2007 after
all -- I thought it wasn't, but on a second look, it appears that it is.
All a bit mysterious.

I've also come up with a couple of ways of working around it, but it
remains a mystery to me why they might have wanted to eliminate "plain
old lines and arrows" in favor of only-connectors.
