Opening hyperlinks in MSProject 2000

I have an old(er) version of MSProject (2000). I heavily use the task
hyperlinks to link tasks to webpage URLs as well as local documents. When I
create and access a hyperlink to a web page or to a non-MSOffice document, it
functions "correctly". By that, I mean that the document opens in the correct
application and when I close/exit the application, it returns to the open
MSProject plan. When I hyperlink to an MSOffice document (Excel, Powerpoint,
etc.) it again opens the document in the correct application but THIS TIME
when I close that, I return to an open MSProject application/session...but my
project plan has been closed !????

This is a very curious and non-intuitive functionality IMHO. There IS a way
around this but it's annoying. I have to right-click on the hyperlink icon on
the task and then select the hyperlink entry on that context menu and then
select "open in new window" (amazingly slow...and there's no keyboard
shortcuts for it). When the "new window" opens, it then will work
"correctly"...namely, when I close that window, I am returned to MSProject
application with my project plan still open.

Any ideas on workarounds for this? I am not familiar enough with VBA to find
a way to customize MSProject to always execute hyperlinks in a new window
(which would be fine with me). I can't seem to find anything on the web that
addresses this. Possibly this issue has been obviated in subsequent versions
of MSProject.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Wes
