opening new word document help opens my documents folder

I am running office xp and am fully updated.my problem is in Microsoft Word.
When I open the help section, I type in my queery and choose the item that I
am asking for help with. What happens then is that ' my documents' folder
opens so I cannot use the help section.The problem I seek help with is that
I do not know how to change the margins in a new document. My blinking
cursor is at the exact top of the page and I do not know how to alter it.
Also could anyone tell me if any documents I have created in Word and saved
can be opened in any other office suite
