Outlook 2002 fails to open

Many times I can close outlook and it will reopen ok. Many times it fails to open and I find it still listed in processes in the task manager, sometimes multiple times. I have no ideas why having the process still listed prevents reopening some of the time and not others. In any case when I end the process(es) I can then open outlook. This is a nuisance to have to go through those steps to open outlook. I'm running XP Pro with all of the service packs and Office XP standard with all of the service packs
