Outlook 2003 - System pauses while receiving email !

Hi,
I have a strange issue...
I have Outlook 2003 under Windows XP, no exchange, and my emails are POP3

When I get an email.. everything stops until Outlook notifies that there are
new emails... this means, that while Outlook is downloading the emails,
programs like Internet Explorer just pauses and resumes....

I can't noticed any performance degradation after this... but it is horrible
while receiving !

Any help / suggestion ?
