We are setting up a new computer with Windows XP and the
Outlook version on Office XP Small Business (2002?). We
previously used Windows 98 2nd ed. and Outlook 2000. We
have a handheld PC and are able to use ActiveSync 3.1 (now
upgraded to 3.7) to transfer data on the Windows
98/Outlook 2000 computer. However, when we try to sync on
the XP computer, we get a message that we need to set up a
profile and that we have not selected a personal
information manager. The "settings" box on ActiveSync
also does not activate on XP when we try to check status.
We have tried everything we can think of to find out what
a personal information manager is and how we set it up.
We were not required to do this on the 98/2000 computer.
We have also tried setting up one computer independently
and both computers under a partnership in ActiveSync.
Neither option changes the result.
The error message refers us to Control Panel and Mail. We
cannot set up Email accounts there because our internet
provider is AOL and is not compatible with Outlook. We
don't need to set up Email accounts, because we are not
trying to sync that information. However, all information
we are trying to sync (contacts, calendar, notes) is from
Microsoft Outlook, which appears to require that some sort
of Email account be established.
Does anyone know how we can get past this problem?
