Outlook checks for email while closed

I had the sober worm a couple of months ago. Now,once I
open Outlook 2000 for the first time of the day, it will
continue to check for email even after I close it. Any
help on how to stop it would be appreciated. I checked
to see if the work offline was checked and it is not.
