Outlook Express 6 opens dialup window even when Internet is available

I am configuring a PC for my mother and I am having trouble with the
Internet connaction. The Win2000 Pro PC is currently connected to a
home LAN behind an ADSL firewall. It also has a built-in modem, which
I have used to create a connectiod for dialup access to the Internet,
primarily for my mother when the PC is moved to her home.

But now, when I am working on the PC on the home LAN and the ethernet
cable is attached and I can easily ping the internet the dialup
dialogue always pops up whenever I want to do something against an
internet resource.
I have changed the IE6 connection settings to "never dial any
connection" and this makes Windows Update work at least.

Bu I am totally failing to get Outlook Express to stop showing the
dialup dialogue when I want to do Send/Receive...

Where is the hidden configuration????

Hi -

In tools, accounts, mail account properties, connection tab, make sure you
don't have anything set up to override the default settings you see in IE.
That said:

This is a group to support Outlook from the Office group of programs.
Outlook Express is a part of Internet Explorer and is a quite different
program, despite its similar name..

You will probably get a faster and more expert answer if you post this to an
Outlook Express news group.

Try posting in one of these newsgroups:
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.outlookexpress for OE 5.x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie55.outlookexpress for OE 5.5x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress for OE 6.x
microsoft.public.internet.outlookexpress.mac for OE for Macintosh

If those groups aren't carried on the news server that's carrying this group
try using msnews.microsoft.com (MS's public news server that's the source
for all the microsoft.public newsgroups).

A good website for information on OE is:

Thanks, that was the cause! Would not have found it myself! :)

Before posting I looked through the list of groups trying to find one
called something like microsoft.public.outlookexpress or similar but
failed. So that is why I posted on this group.
Microsoft really did a bad naming job when they gave two so dissimilar
products almost the same name...
I am using Outlook 2003 myself, have never used OE at all, but I have
to configure it for some relatives who don't have MS Office.

Thanks for the group addresses, too!

No worries - glad it's fixed.

No kidding - very annoying, isn't it....and also annoying that the groups
are buried under the IE group names.

You're most welcome.

They both seem to point to the same place, so I don't think you need to
bother changing.

In your newsreader, just enter "express" to see all of the newsgroups
containing that string.
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general is one.
news.microsoft.com is an alias of msnews.microsoft.com so either will work.
nslookup news.microsoft.com
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: msnews.MICROSOFT.COM
Address: 207.46.248.16
Aliases: NEWS.MICROSOFT.COM
