Outlook inaccessible files

Connie

I recently installed Office XP on my new computer and can't use Outlook.
I've tried uninstalling and re-installing, and repairing more than once.
I've downloaded all the updates. When I try to open Outlook I get the
message "cannot access default e-mail files ." It then gives me the option
of having my standard files instead of the Outlook folders but that's no
good. I can't send or receive.

Have you re-added your .PST file to your profile?

Your .PST file is the file that stores all your Outlook data -- mail,
contacts, appointments, tasks, etc. -- and some settings. You should see at
least one of them listed under File | Data File Management -- if you can't
get to this when Outlook is open, go to Control Panel, click the Mail icon,
and click Data Files. If you don't see a .PST file listed there, you will
need to add the file you used before you installed Outlook 2002. Actually,
I'm assuming you were already using Outlook previously -- maybe I shouldn't
assume this. Were you using Outlook?

Obviously something is corrupted somewhere. I created a ,pst file. Now I
get the message "Unable to display the folder. Microsoft Outlook could not
access the specified folder location. The folder no longer exists." I
also tried putting in the files from my old pc which has a working copy of
Outlook. I got the same message when I did that. Do you have any further
suggestions?

What process did you use to create the new .PST file and what process did
you use to try to open your old .PST file(s)?

I used a wizard to create the new pst files. I copied the old ones then
pasted them into the proper folder. I didn't actually open them at all.

What wizard did you use? Do you mean you copied the files themselves to a
folder? They don't have to be in any particular folder, either...Outlook
can use them from any folder on your hard drive that you can see from your
Windows profile.

Do you think you know which .PST file you were using as your primary file
before? Did you ever go into Control Panel | Mail | Data Files like I
suggested before (I wasn't clear on that from your later replies)...if you
do that, what do you see?
