Pagination for perfect binding

I configured two pages to be printed on each landscape 8.5"x11" sheet. I
want to bind these pages by stacking the sheets and stapling them in the
center.

I have page numbers in the footer from 1 to 48 or so. Sheet one has pages 1
and 2, sheet two has pages 3 and 4, etc. To bind them the way that I want,
the first sheet should have pages 1 and 48, and sheet two have pages 2 and
47, or something along those lines, so that the pages are in numerical order
after they are stacked and stapled in the center.

Is there a way to do this?

Happy New Year! Thanks for your guidance.

One way is to use
File > Page setup
Under "Multiple pages" choose "Book fold"

Then, each page on the screen is half a sheet, and the document prints two
pages per sheet the way you'd like (hopefully). You might have to
experiment with the "Sheets per booklet" setting to get things the way you
want.

(I have Word 2003.)
