pdf changes to dat files when sending

Shelley

Have changed from Outlook Express to Outlook and having problems with MYOB (accounting program). We send our invoices through MYOB (it does all the work - configures everything and then send it as an attachment) and it sends them in a .pdf format through the default email. Some people are getting .pdf files and others are having .dat files coming to them. Not sure why the .dat files are going (all should be .pdf) and how do I fix it so all are .pdf files ... any help .. I am desperate!

Don't use rich text format for your message settings- try plain text or
HTML.

HTML was the settings I was using .. I also tried plain text. Still sending some as .dat files. Went back to using Outlook Express (as default) and they send as .pdf files. Changed some settings in Outlook 2000 but now can't figure out how to make it my default to see if the changes make a difference. Can you tell me how to make it my default (Outlook 2000 that is) and any other ideas why some files go as .pdf and some as .dat. Thanks again. Shelley----- Lanwench [MVP - Exchange] wrote: ----

Hmmm - most strange! That usually solves this problem. Is this
consistent/reproducible?

If you want to make Outlook the default mail client again, go to control
panel, internet mail, programs....set it there. :)

It is strange .. it is our invoicing .. some clients are fine and others are not. We only changed to Outlook this month but it looks to be an ongoing thing. Not sure what you mean by reproducible .. sorry. We would like to use Outlook as we were using express and intermittently emails were not getting to our customers and nothing was coming back to us to let us know they hadn't got them. Really not sure how to fix this.----- Lanwench [MVP - Exchange] wrote: ----

sorry.

I mean, can you make this problem occur when you wish, or is it random?

Probably something more to do with your mail server than your mail client.
Really
not sure how to fix this.----- Lanwench [MVP - Exchange] wrote: -----

Hi Shelly,

I have exactly the same problem, I recently upgraded one of my clients email program from OE to Outlook 2003 and they are having the winmail.dat prob.

Basically its cause outlook sends the files as Rich Text and if the receiver cant see rich text emails they get the winmail.dat attachment rather then the PDF.

I set my defaults to Plain text and also send attachments as UUENCODE everything I could change I changed to plain text but it still sends it as Rich Text.
Once MYOB sends the email if I go into sent items and properties on the email it says sent in Rich Text format if I say resend and then force it to plain text the receiver can get the PDF fine.

Seems like external programs don't care of what mail format you have it set to it automatically sends it via rich text!

I've set the client up to send via express but receive via outlook so they can still use the calendar till I work out this problem if I ever can.
