Photo Gallery Customization

I inserted photo gallery and I used the slide show
layout. I want to change the arrangement of the page as
below:

1. move the bigger picture to the left of the screen and
move the small ones to the right and next to the big one.
2. Add another raw of thumbnails which will allow me to
update the same big picture.

I know this may involve some serious coding. Anyone every
tried it?

The photo gallery templates (and .js files) are not easily customized, and often the only way to change a layout is start fresh
IMHO - search Google for JavaScript slide shows
