I need a way to have a pop up text block appear when a word is clicked (like
for a definition of a word). I can't seem to find a way to do this. Help!

What version of powerpoint are you using?
If you are using 2002/XP and 2003, you probably want to use trigger
animation to do so.
Add a textbox, type in the additional words.
Then, click slide show > Custom animation.
Click add effect > entrance > appear/fade.
Next, right click on the effect and click timing.
Click triggers, select Start effect on click of.
Select the word that you are going to click.

Then, you can add an exit effect (disappear/fade) so that it will fade after
few seconds. (Adjust the delay to about 5 seconds, and set the start to
"After previous")

Alternately, try the Sonia quicktrick #16 using mouseover:

Which version of PPT are you using?

If you are using 2002 or later, you can set up a pair of triggered
animations to do this. Give the definition box an entrance animation and an
exit animation. Place a box with no line and 98% fill over the word. Right
click the entrance animation and select timing. Change the radio button from
"as part of a timed sequence" to "triggered". From the drop down box that
appears, select the empty box you just created. OK your way out. Repeat the
process for the exit animation, but have the trigger be the box containing
the definition.

If you are using one of the earlier versions, you will need to set up a
hyperlink to another slide that shows the box and then a hyperlink back to
the original slide to hide it.

You can do this in VB.

Press Alt-F11 to open a VB editing window and insert a form, then add a
label to the form, put text in the caption of the label and save it.

Then create a macro and insert the command "MyForm.show"

The go to the presentation, highlight the word you are going to click to
show the text, right click and select Action Settings-run macro.
