The "custom show" button in the "set up show" "show slides" box is dark;
only the "all" and the "from---to" buttons are available. Can anyone tell me
what I need to do to make the custom show button available. Is there a
install option I need to select at installation time?

Do you have a custom show set up? You need to have a custom show created
before you can use it as your default show in Slide Show --> Set up Show.

To set up a custom show, go to Slide Show--> Custom Show and click new.
Give the show a name, and assign some slides to it. Then you can make that
show the default show.
