powerpoint crashes

When inserting any special symbol in a document PPT
crashes.
I tried to repair (help menu(?)-->Detect and Repair) but
it doesn't change any thing.
Do you have another idea how to fix that problem.

What language settings are you using? I know there are some issues with
French autocorrect tools -- wondering if something similar is at play
here.
