preserve task hierarchy in reports

When extracting task information, the hierarchy of the tasks is not preserved
in Project reports (To-Do lists, Who does what when etc.). On generic tasks
like "Unit testing" which have no meaning without the hierarchy (which might
contain the module name to be unit tested), the reports are lacking
information. How do I preserve task hierarchy when generating reports.

Hello kmellach,

The tasks hierarchy will not show in either report you mention because
we don't assign resources to summary tasks. You should be able to get
close to the "To Do List" by applying the "Using Resource" filter to the
Gantt Chart view and printing the view.

The "Who Does What When report" can be approximated by printing the
Resource Usage view and by adding the field "Task Summary name" to the
view to show you the summary task information.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

I agree that the task names should not be very generic. It however, causes a
lot of redundancy when I have to put all the information in just the task
name, defeating the purpose of grouping/indenting to some extent. This
situation gets even more complicated when I'm sharing different projects to
use a resource pool. Even when generic task names are not used, it would be
helpful to have the hierarchy displayed on reports.

I appreciate your response. I am using a combination of both your
suggestions, and adding a couple more fields to get closer to what I wanted
to achieve. Thanks again.
