printer-independent save?

It seems like saved documents are somewhat dependent on the printer
currently in effect. Could someone elaborate on this issue? I'm using
publisher 2003. The reason I say this is if I save a file when the printer
is a text-only printer, then when I re-open that file, I would get a
font-substitution dialog box.

What is the best printer to select before saving if the saved document is to
be distributed to different people using different kinds of printers?

When I'm adding printer, I see a "MS publisher color printer" under generic
brand. What is this printer used for?

Any printer apart from a text printer, really.

This is a generic colour printer used in older versions of Publisher for
setting images for print.
