Printing FROM Onenote

C

Carole

I'm evaluating a trial version of OneNote 2007 on a 64bit laptop running
Vista Home Premium. I've worked around printing INTO ON, but now having
problems printing OUT of ON.

When I go to File > Print, the print dialog box appears with all my printers
listed, but all the options except "Find Printer" and "Cancel" greyed out.
Then a print error message appears with:
"Before you can print, you need to select a printer. If you need to
install a printer, either double-click the Add Printer icon or click the Find
Printer...button located on the General Tab of this dialog".
The Add Printer icon is already highlighted, but when I click or
double-click it, nothing happens. Same with the "find printer" option. I
can click on any of the printers, including my Epson which is marked as
default, with the same results....nothing. :) I can send to Word and print
from there. In fact all of my printers are working in other Office
programs......just not in ON.

I had problems with the trial version not accepting the activation code and
have bypassed the activation and therefore have a limited number of times to
run the program before activation (19 more times available). This is the
same as you would find on pre-bundled software on new computers.

I've rebooted (solves so many problems!) and run Office Diagnostics that
didn't find any problems. Is this a problem with:
1. No "send to ON driver" problem experienced by 64x bit machines?
2. The way I'm running the trial version?
3. Something I haven't thought of yet?

All help would be appreciated. This is the last step of my testing. But,
if I can't get info out.....easily.....after I get it into ON it will be a
deal killerl

Thanks!
Carole

This is really strange.
Printing *TO* OneNote is a "known problem".
But - having been active in this newsgroup since the early days of
ON-Beta - I really can not remember to ever have come across the
problems you are having to face.

I'm so sorry!
This is a really bad situation.
With a working ON I would have just suggested to un-install and
re-install.
But in your specific case this won't work {siiiiigh}.

As said before (in your other thread) I would call the MS-hotline and
ask for a new key.
It would really be too bad would you decide to not buy OneNote just
because you did not have enough time to test it to it to its limits.
I've rebooted (solves so many problems!) and run Office Diagnostics

1. No "send to ON driver" problem experienced by x64 bit

*NO*
Normally no problems at all with printing *FROM* OneNote.
Be assured, it works without any problems.
2. The way I'm running the trial version?

Could be. I just can not say.
It might be that with a "fully working" version the "Repair" would have
fixed the problem. But that's just an assumption.
3. Something I haven't thought of yet?

No idea on what it might be. :-( :-(
It's really one of the strangest things I ever heard on ON.
All help would be appreciated. This is the last step of my
testing. But, if I can't get info out.....easily.....after I get

Don't be afraid.
*Everything* will work pretty fine - except the "Send-to" printing
problem.

I do not know what you do, nor how you work.
Therefore I can only speak for myself.
OneNote for sure is the best piece of software I have come across for
many long years. It's most used application on my systems. And it adds a
whole lot to my productivity.
So I would be really sorry, would the "deal killer" really catch you.

I am working with a Gateway tablet and an HP tablet, both runnin
Windows XP. I have the Send to OneNote on the printer list.

The trouble is that on the HP (logged in with a student profile) whe
the student tries to use the send to OneNote command they receive
message that says "OneNote cannot find the file you specified." If th
student is logged onto the Gateway it works just fine. If I am logged i
as administrator on the HP it works just fine. An
suggestions?:confused

Can the student user account open the OneNote application on the HP tablet
and view the Unfiled Notes notebook?

M

Yes

I also tried creating a new OneNote document and directing it to tha
file. No luck

I also checked the under the properties of the Send to OneNote icon (i
print) to make sure that OneNotePrint2007 and RAW were selected
(Properties, Advanced, Print Processor, OneNotePrint2007 and RAW

Do you get an error message when you attempt a test print from the printer
object?

Have you confirmed that there are no typos or trailing spaces in the printer
object name?

You've been very helpful Rainald! I think I'll have to call MS
Support......just hate to because my calls to them always seem to take as
much time as just trying different solutions on my own. But......there comes
a time! :)

I originally wanted to look at ON to help me with the personal project I've
given myself of writing a family history to give my son and grandchildren.
While I'm not old (at least in my own opinion!!), I figure "Grandma" won't be
around forever to keep telling the stories......better get them recorded.
Plus, I maintain a personal website and can see lots of potential for help
with that as well.

However, even in my short testing time, I've realized how helpful this would
be at my work.....for all of us. So, my testing has expanded beyond
organizing notes and making my personal life easier to something I can use to
show our company owner the value of the software. Needless to say, I'm a
tough customer, but he's even tougher. :)

Based on your experiences, and what I've seen for myself, I think I'll go
ahead and buy a copy for myself. I've figured out a work around or two for
my stuff. Maybe with the full blown copy, I can show Kurt the value for the
company. I'm sure MS would be glad to help me if it means convincing someone
to invest in a corporate license!! :)

Thank you for all your help and your input. With the troubles I've had,
I've spent a lot of time reading the newsgroup and find your answers to
others helpful. Must be the "teacher" in you!

Hope you don't mind, I'll probably be back with more questions as I move
forward with implementation! :)

The only error message that appears is when OneNote is opening afte
clicking on print and send to OneNote. A pop up window appears wit
"OneNote cannot find the file you specified" in it.

Thank you for trying to help me with this.

From what you report, I guess that the student might not have the proper
rights set for the directory where the notebook files are stored.
Check the paths set in ON and the rights for the notebooks directory.

By "no luck" I mean that redirecting it to another folder did not fi
the problem for the student profile.

But I could redirect it back to the unfiled notes as it was before

I'm not so sure :-(
MS meanwhile has become such a siiiiigh body that most often it is

Would we volunteers be so active if MS was not that intransigent?

A usual environment.
Where are the OneNote notebooks stored?
Inside the hierarchy of the folders in the user profiles?
In a shared directory on the server?
To which location does the ON setting for the storage of the "Unfiled
Notes" point?

Understood.
AFAICS there are differences in the setup of the Gateway and the HP
computer.
Problem is to find out which ones.

The printouts option is set to the student's network directory to
folder called "OneNote Notebooks" and a file called "Unfiled Notes.one
(I looked under Tools, options, Send to OneNote in the OneNote program.
Both computers have this same path

Thanks for the additional information.

I'm still clueless.
If both client computers are working with the same directory on the
server and it works with one of them but not the other, the only thing
that I could think of - besides the settings of the rights for the
directory and files in questions - would be policy settings for
attaching to the server.
But I am not a specialist in this respect.

You might experiment with placing the "Unfiled notes" to some other
location on the server.
