You'll have to describe your setup and problem in more detail, and what
you already tried to fix it, otherwise we can't really help you.

Hi. Sorry about that. I have a WLAN at a medical office with my tablet pc
(me) and a desktop (my secretary) which is acting as a server. She has XP Pro
and I have XP Tablet Edition and we are using OneNote 2007. I am trying to
share onenote notebooks which we have set up as patient charts. My secretary
creates the "charts" and I try to access the ones she has created and enter
the medical information, etc. Although the network is working, and I can see
her onenote notebook folder on the desktop, I cannot open it on my tablet. I
get 2 types of error messages : either "there are no open sections in tis
notebook" even though there are; and when I try to open individual sections
in the notebook, it tells me I "do not have permission" to do so. I have made
the onenote notebook folder a shared folder on both our PCs. Like I said the
2 PCs can see the folders, I just can't open them and modify them. I tried
adjusting the sharing and security settings and making everyone able to share
and edit the folders, but it made no differences. I have booted and rebooted
a million times, to no avail. Any suggestions? Thanks again.

Something in your setup sounds off. Can you make sure that there is one
shared folder on the XP machine with NTFS and share permissions
sufficient enough for you? (There are permissions to set on the share
tab and on the security tab).
Then make sure that all notebooks are in that folder, and that they have
correctly inherited the permissions from that folder.
Then on your Tablet, go into File, Open Notebook in OneNote and navigate
to that network share (you can type the share name in, no need to map a
drive). Pick a notebook and click Open Notebook. Does that work?

Thanks Patrick. I will try that and get back to you. I don't know if this
helps at all, but I can open the onenote folders that are pre-installed (like
Classes, Projects, etc), but not the new ones I have created. Does that make
sense?

No need to go into safe mode...
I don't remember if you can do it in XP Home, but you have to switch off
the simple sharing feature. Then in the security tab for the folder,
click Advanced and select the checkbox to restore inheritance for all
subfolders. When you click OK, Windows will reset the permissions on all
subfolders.

You're right for XP Pro, but for XP home, you cannot switch off simple file
sharing and you don't get the option for sharing & security tabs. You can
only do it via safe mode. Well, I tried your suggestion and saw that by
default the inheritance option is on, but when I look at the individual
notebook folders they are all set at "do not share". What's weird is I can
open some of the pre-installed folders that are set as "do not share", but
not the new ones I have created. Very confusing. I appreciate your help
Patrick. Any other options?

Do this on XP Pro?
Simple file sharing is a pain. It just doesn't get the concept of
sharing a folder across correctly. Basically, you'd share the folder,
set the file permissions and the files in the folder would be accessible
via the folder share.

I don't remember if you can do it in XP Home, but you have to switch off
the simple sharing feature. Then in the security tab for the folder,
click Advanced and select the checkbox to restore inheritance for all
subfolders. When you click OK, Windows will reset the permissions on all
subfolders.

ok, i tried it on my home network. i have xp home on my home desktop but I
went into safe mode and changed the security settings there. i rebooted and
checked to see of the folder in onenote notebooks inheritede the security
settings and they did not.

:

Something in your setup sounds off. Can you make sure that there is one
shared folder on the XP machine with NTFS and share permissions
sufficient enough for you? (There are permissions to set on the share
tab and on the security tab).
Then make sure that all notebooks are in that folder, and that they have
correctly inherited the permissions from that folder.
Then on your Tablet, go into File, Open Notebook in OneNote and navigate
to that network share (you can type the share name in, no need to map a
drive). Pick a notebook and click Open Notebook. Does that work?

Hello again Patrick. I tried all of the security settings on the office
computer. For a minute it worked and all of the ones I had tried to set up
over the weekend were visible and accessible. Then I tried to make a couple
more new ones and then I had the same old problem. I don't know what made
those ones work and not the new ones. There were no other settings I could
have changed. Maybe it's not a permission/sharing issue at all. Even folders
which were designated as do not share were accessible. Hmmmmmmm. What other
options are there?

Simple file sharing is a pain. It just doesn't get the concept of
sharing a folder across correctly. Basically, you'd share the folder,
set the file permissions and the files in the folder would be accessible
via the folder share.

hi, i'm having problems sharing my onenote notebooks between my tablet pc &

Ok, i figured out a solution Patrick.

First, we have to make the onenote folder a shared folder. Then map the
network drive for the onenote notebook folder (drive Z or whatever). Then
open onenote and go to the network drive and open the notebook. It works
great and syncs properly. I tried it with old and new folders and it works.
Hope this will be helpful to someone else.

Thanks for the research Ali... are you saying that using \\PC
Name\User\Folder (DNC naming) does not work but mapping a drive letter will?
I've been having similar problems with a Vista desktop to Vista laptop
shared notebook and I finally got it to work by storing the ON notebooks on
the laptop and letting the desktop share them. I could never make it work
the other way and maybe the drive mapping was the problem.

Take care,
Lon

Drive mapping should be irrelevant. OneNote will resolve the mapped
drive automatically into the UNC name before it adds the notebook.

You're probably right. All I can say is I have tried all kinds of ideas and
suggestions and it worked only when I mapped the drive on the desktop
(server) and accessed that with my tablet on the LAN.
