Progressing tasks & retaining logic

P

Planning Monkey

Using MSP2003.

When I progress my plan, MSP shows me retained logic + progress whereas,
what I would like to see is the progressed parts of activities before the
Status date and parts of activities that have not been started behind the
status date (with the option to either retain, or not, the logic)

I've tried the options under Tools/Options an the Calculation tab but to no
avail.

Can anybody tell me how to achieve this view in my plan, please.

There is no option in MSProject that will automatically alter logic, you have
to do that by hand.

If you go to status your project why would you ever want to leave incomplete
work to the left of the status date?

In certain circumstances, task owners establish a "fixed" duration for an
activity, say 15 business days. When it comes to day 8 and they have to show
status they should be claiming about 50%. If they claim less, they may argue
that the intial work is tough but they will finish in a flourish on time.
This is your first clue the task owner is lying.

Perhaps another way to approach this is from a "remaining work" perspective.
Ask the task owners to give you work completed and hours needed to finish
the task. Let your %Complete land where it may. The same argument can be
made for remaining duration. You may need to adjust resource assignmetn % to
get values where you want. This provides a truer picture of what it takes to
complete the task.

Something else to consider is the task type and whether it is effort driven.
Although these settings do not directly address your concern, it causes
decisions to be made if this task is really fixed duration, fixed work, or
the default of fixed units.
